Replacing this one word can change your outlook on just about everything. Learn how shedding your big ol’ “but” can streamline your way of thinking and allow you to operate at peak performance.
Fall is here, and for those of us in the Green Zone, that means it’s time to spend more time in the great, green outdoors. It also means that we are likely more focused on getting our work done as efficiently as possible so that we can play and enjoy the long, lazy days ahead.
However, fall might signify something entirely different for those frequently finding themselves in the Red Zone. Operating at a high level of distress, chronic Red Zoners might feel overwhelmed by the increase in social gatherings and use work as an excuse to hide from uncomfortable situations—especially when it involves showing more of oneself.
Unfortunately, too many of us have a big “but” that prevents us from truly enjoying the present moment.
I want to enjoy the sunshine, BUT I have too much work to do.
The bottom line is that what’s going on in your brain affects what happens in your life.
Luckily, I have three simple suggestions to rewire your thinking and get you doing more of what you enjoy.
How to Shed Your Big ol’ BUT in 3 Easy Steps.
1. Tap into your emotional and problem-solving coping skills.
Before you can realistically tackle a problem, you need to make sure you are solidly out of the Red Zone. If your number is hovering between 7 and 10 on the emotional scale, take the time to figure out what works best for you and get yourself in the proper headspace: music, movement, breathing, time to yourself—a clear, calm brain is your goal.
2. Next, replace “BUT” with “AND.”
“But” is a roadblock. Nothing turns people off more or ruins the mood like it.
But we all do it, AND we don’t have to. (See what I did there?)
By swapping out that one word, endless possibilities open up. When you’re no longer limited by what you can’t do, you realize you have everything you need to solve your problem.
Now it’s your turn.
Like the example I gave earlier, think of your own big BUT statement and put it in this format:
“I want to _______, BUT ___________.
Now. replace that BUT with AND and notice the difference.
“I want to _______, AND ___________.
It’s like magic—right?
The best part is that this works for everyone, so encourage people around you to do the same and start a positive problem-solving movement!
3. Pick one thing to focus on and make it happen.
Alright, you’re feeling calm in the Green Zone and clearly recognize your hurdle. Now, it’s time to brainstorm some solutions.
Ask yourself this: What can I do?
It might seem obvious, but it really is that simple. There are always options if you are open and ready to acknowledge them. Weigh the pros and cons, prioritize your to-do list, adjust your approach, ask for help—find what works best for you—and take action.
The truth is life won’t always go as planned. It’s also true that with the right mindset, you can still flourish.
My challenge to you is to take advantage of this new season. Let go of what’s holding you back and start experimenting with a new way of seeing yourself—it could land you square in both the figurative and literal Green Zone of fall.
