The Red Zone is not a place but rather a head space. You are in the Red Zone when you experience high levels of stress or what psychologists call distress. Distress includes any emotions you don’t want (such as sadness, anxiety, fear, anger, irritability, guilt, shame, helplessness, hopelessness…) And distress exists on a continuum from 0 (“No distress at all”) to 10 (“The most distressed you have ever been”).
The Red Zone happens when you are at a 7/10 or higher. And in the Red Zone, we think in more negative ways, our ability to function or perform diminishes, relationships can be strained and our health can plummet.
